Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) are widely recognised as the way forward to tackle water quantity and quality within the built environment. Delivery of SuDS has become entrenched within the planning system, and should be a primary consideration for all developments. 

The challenge for the UK
More housing is needed to keep up with the additional demand from rising life expectancy, immigration and single-person households. At the same time, increased development over the past several decades means rain that once would have permeated through the soil now flows quickly through drain pipes into watercourses, increasing flood risk and reducing water quality. 

Sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) are widely recognised as the way forward. In December 2014 the government announced that SuDS would be delivered through the planning system. All applications for major development would need to include SuDS strategies and in many cases, even minor developments require serious consideration of drainage at planning stage.
