RAB train flood response teams
Feb 7, 2014

The Environment Agency's response to this winter's extreme weather relies on the hard work and skill of the incident room teams, many trained by RAB.

RAB are an Incident Management Training supplier to the Environment Agency. We've been training  Base Controllers, Flood Warning Duty Officers, Monitoring and Forecasting Duty Officers, Flood Incident Duty Officers and Tactical Liaison Officers since 2005.

The Base Controller is a tactical manager who co-ordinates the Environment Agency’s response to flood and environmental incidents from an incident room. In 2013, we introduced a new modular  training programme, accredited by the Emergency Planning Society, that takes delegates from complete novice to competent and confident Base Controllers. The programme involves 6 months of classroom learning, exercise and experience based training.

Feedback from the taught elements – modules 2, 3 and 5 has just been reported, and found to be very positive.

  • 100% felt that the course was well run and organised;
  • 100% felt that the modules achieved their individual aims;
  • 98% of delegates across the three courses felt that their skills and knowledge had improved;
  • 99% felt that the exercise scenarios were realistic and relevant.
