Flood Risk Assessment, Askrigg, North Yorkshire
Dec 4, 2017

RAB Consultants completed a Flood Risk Assessment to support an industrial development at a site adjacent to the river Ure to the south east of Askrigg in North Yorkshire.

The development site is located partly in Flood Zone 2 and 3 in accordance with the Environment Agency’s Flood Map for Planning. The development is for the conversion of an existing industrial unit to be sub-divided into 4 smaller units and for the installation of two gas tanks to the south of the site.

The Environment Agency’s flood map for planning showed that the proposed location of the new gas tanks was in Flood Zone 2 and 3. However, during a site walkover, it was identified that ground levels fall away steeply compared to those where the gas tanks were proposed.

Further investigation was subsequently carried out by comparing ground levels (obtained from 50cm resolution LiDAR data in conjunction with a topographic survey of the site) and showed that the gas tanks would be located approximately 2.2m above the Flood Zone 2 extent at the southern boundary.

The primary risk to the site was identified to be fluvial flooding from the River Ure and Paddock Beck.

A comparison of ground levels showed that the gas tanks will be located approximately 2.2m above the Flood Zone 2 extent at the southern boundary of the site and it was recommended that the gas tanks were installed a further 150mm above ground level.

It was concluded that the development is appropriate given the flood risk, and will not increase flood risk elsewhere.
