Flood Risk Assessment, St Chads College Boathouse, Durham
Nov 30, 2017

In late 2016, St Chads College Boathouse was destroyed by a fallen tree. Following rebuilding, an objection was raised by the local planning authority, stating that the new boathouse required a flood risk assessment to be carried out as the site is located in Flood Zone 2 in accordance with the Environment Agency’s Flood Map for Planning. In August 2017, RAB Consultants were approached by St Chads College, Durham to prepare a Flood Risk Assessment to help gain planning permission.

Our assessment involved:
A site visit including a topographic survey.

  • Data collection, including the Environment Agency’s most recently modelled flood data for the River Wear.

  • Liaison with the Environment Agency & Durham County Council.

  • An assessment of flood risk from all sources including; fluvial, coastal/tidal, surface water, groundwater and drainage related

The primary source of flooding was identified to be from the River Wear to the east of the site. The development was assessed to be ‘Water compatible’ and recommendations were provided to mitigate the risk of flooding.

It was concluded that the development is appropriate and would not increase flood risk elsewhere.
