Flood Risk Assessment including 1D-2D hydraulic modelling, Mytholmroyd, West Yorkshire

RAB Consultants has completed a flood risk assessment for a residential development in Mytholmroyd, West Yorkshire. This included 1D-2D modelling in support of outline planning permission.

The site was in flood zone 2 in accordance with the Environment Agency’s flood map. The main source of flooding was Cragg Brook, which runs along the western boundary of the site. A simple 1D modelled data for Cragg Brook was available, but to better understand the flood mechanism and flood depths on the flood plain a 1D-2D hydraulic model was developed using Flood Modeller Pro. The model included a complex arrangement of weirs, bridges and spills. Flood risk was mapped using 1D-2D linked schematization.

In order to meet the requirements of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) our assessment involved:

  • Data collection, including hydraulic modelling of the Cragg Brook.
  • Liaison with the Environment Agency
  • An assessment of the risk of flooding from all sources including fluvial, groundwater and surface water.
  • Recommendations were provided, balanced against design / construction constraints specified by the client.
