Flood Risk Assessment, Ayr, Scotland
Jan 23, 2017

RAB Consultants recently completed a Flood Risk Assessment in support of a planning application for a development proposal in Ayr, Scotland.

SEPA’s surface water flood risk map identified the development site as being at risk from surface water flooding. Under the new development proposal the impermeable area of the site is shown to expand meaning there would be an increase in surface water runoff, potentially increasing the flood risk to the surrounding area. Subsequently, RAB Consultants undertook infiltration testing at three locations in line with the BRE 365 method, this demonstrated that there is the potential for adequate infiltration across the site.

In order to meet the requirements of the Scottish Planning Policy (SPP), our assessment involved:

  • Data collection including infiltration testing in line with the BRE 365 method

  • Liaison with SEPA and South Ayrshire Council regarding the availability and use of current flood risk data

  • An assessment of the risk of flooding from all sources including fluvial, coastal/tidal, groundwater and surface water

  • Recommendations were provided, balanced against design / construction plans specified by the client
