Flood Risk Assessment, West Auckland, County Durham
Oct 26, 2015

RAB Consultants prepared a Flood Risk Assessment in support of a proposed residential development at West Auckland in north east England.

The development site is located in Flood Zones 2 and 3 in accordance with the Environment Agency’s Flood Map for Planning (Rivers and Sea) and is at risk of flooding from the River Gaunless and Oakley Cross Beck.

RAB Consultants carried out a site visit to assess the flood risk to this site in relation to local ground levels.

Our assessment to meet the requirements of the National Planning Policy Framework also involved:

  • Data collection, including the Environment Agency’s most recently modelled flood data for both the River Gaunless and Oakley Cross Beck in West Auckland
  • Liaison with the Environment Agency, Durham County Council and Northumbrian Water Ltd
  • An assessment of the risk of flooding from all sources including fluvial, surface water, groundwater and drainage related.

RAB recommended finished floor levels for the properties within the development, and produced a Flood Warning and Evacuation Plan for the client. It was also recommended for future residents to sign up to receive the Environment Agency’s Flood Warning Service which is available for this area of West Auckland.
